Can Orthotics Help Low Back Pain?
If one has low back pain (“LBP”), they should be examined by their general practitioner, back specialist, physiotherapist or chiropractor. If the above specialists diagnose that there is not a back issue needing their help, or if the pain is not fully resolved with the above specialists’ treatment plans, one should check foot function. LBP may be partially or solely due to abnormal foot biomechanics, as feet are one’s foundation. If one could control their abnormal foot biomechanics, then could help address LBP.
As the foot pronates (rolls in), the leg rotates inward, which puts pressure on the hip and back. If abnormal, your podiatrist will recommend shoes that are appropriate for your foot type, and if necessary will prescribe and take a 3D impression of your foot for custom orthotics.
There are various examinations the podiatrist will do of the feet/lower extremity to determine if orthotics are needed. These examinations include reviewing the stance and range of motion, as well as a biomechanical gait analysis reviewing alignment and walking pattern. Physical exams will check the range of motion of one’s foot and ankle (lower extremity), as well as muscle strength, leg length and callus pattern. Additionally, the podiatrist may review shoe features and wear pattern.
